Wales' First Micro Drama/Vertical Comedy

In the film Moneyball, Billy Beane sets out to win a World Series. He’s not one of the top teams so needs to think differently. So he uses a new recruiting process to bring in undervalued players. It’s a maverick approach. He’s the first to do it. Yet it works…kinda.

First Day - First Slate

There’s a sentiment in the film that the first guy through the wall is always bloody. It’s a good way of describing what it’s like to be first.

When we set out to make Wales’ first self funded vertical series Glen’s Boutique in 2025, there was no talk of IP or having a strategy for building a commercial property, just the love of form. 

Since then there has been a whole host of Wales based micro dramas and comedies. Some of them even have massive budgets and crews. There is now even a training program to teach people how to make verticals, which is brilliant.

But the same thing keeps recurring, this constant talk of IP. All we wanted to do was do something that was fun. That was a lot of hard work with tight deadlines and required a strong work ethic. Structure, timing and the overall form was exciting enough for us. 

Now with more and more Wales based verticals cropping up and more and more talk of IP, I wonder where does it go from here? 

We learnt a lot from Glens Boutique and aim to use that knowledge in Season Two. But what we won’t be doing is treating these stories and characters like a commercial property. 

They should be treated with respect because the people that enjoyed it should be able to keep enjoying it, without feeling like they're watching a commercial.

They should enjoy the characters, the situations, the jokes, they should just be able to have fun. That doesn’t take away from creators thinking about the future. It just means what you’re making should come first before anything else.

Moneyball concludes with Billy Beane being made a lucrative offer to join the Boston Red Sox using his new found methodology.

He turns it down, he’s not interested in money. 

He’s interested in the game. 

Even if next season the Boston Red Sox finally win a World Series without him.

We made the first Wales Based Self Funded Vertical Series and we did it for the love of the game.

We didn’t have a giant crew.

Any funding.

Or make any money.

The other line in Moneyball that I love is; “How can you not be romantic about baseball?”

So, we might be Billy Beane and the Oakland Athletics.

We might’ve come in second.

We might’ve gotten bloody.

And we’re probably never gonna win the World Series.

But I don’t see how anyone can be romantic about IP.

I hope people keep making things.

Pushing the form.

Telling unique stories.

Stories with interesting characters.

Because sometimes the only reason to make something is because you really want too.

How can you not be romantic about that?
